UGC Postgraduate Merit Scholarship is provided as a scholarship, which is given by the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) to help students with academic merit to study postgraduate courses in Indian universities and colleges. Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria are as follows:
- Academic Qualification: The candidate should have gained the first or second position in any of the known universities or colleges in the undergraduate (UG) level in India.The student would be required to have finalized an undergraduate course of study of the first grade.
- Course of Study: The learner should be pursuing a full-time regular postgraduate (PG) course in a familiar university, college or institution that is associated with UGC.
- Field of Study: The scholarship is available in postgraduate courses that are not professional like arts, science, commerce, and humanities.
- Age Limit: The candidate should be less than 30 years of age when he/she joins the first year of the postgraduate program.
- Nationality: The candidate should be an Indian national.
- Exclusions: The postgraduate students studying using a distance learning or by correspondence are ineligible. The scholarship does not apply to professional or technical courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management etc.
Documents Required
- Aadhaar Card – for candidate’s verification purpose
- Undergraduate Degree Marksheet / Certificate – Document of having acquired first or second rank in undergraduate course.
- University Rank Certificate – Certificate given by the university indicating the candidate having rank (1st or 2nd) in the UG level.
- Admission Evidence of Postgraduates – Admission letter or enrolment certificate of the institution where the candidate is doing his or her post graduates studies. Bank Accounts – Copy of the passbook of the active bank account of the student that is connected with Aadhaar (preferably nationalized bank).
- Institution Verification Form- Signed and verified by the head of the institution or the official in charge.
- Income Certificate (where applicable) – It might not be necessary, however, some of them may ask you to provide it to make sure that it is valid.
- Passport-size Photograph of the candidate
- Bonafide Certificate – It is issued by the existing institution that states that the student is attending a regular and full time course in the PG.

- Monthly Scholarship Amount: All the chosen students are provided with 3,100 a month of financial support.
- Duration of the Scholarship: The scholarship is granted over a two-year span which covers the whole course of the postgraduate program (there is no extension of the scholarship after two years).
- Mode of Payment: Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system is used to remit the scholarship amount directly into the bank account of a student to make it transparent and timely.
- Financial Support Intended Use: The sum can be utilized to cover the academic costs including tuition fees, books, stationeries, accommodation, and other educational requirements in the course of postgraduation.
- Total Value: The cumulative value of the scholarship in two years is 74,400 / student ( 3,100 x 24 months).
